My favourite contemporary ensemble Aavikko has a new record out. I actually have not heard the record yet, as I just sold my stereo amplifier... Anyways, I just saw Aavikko live last night and they are in top form, and the new material sounds super! I think they dived in to search for the lost city of Atlantis, and for my money they have found it.

There was this little article on silent disco in yesterday’s paper. According to the Wikipedia: The idea has been around since the 1990s espoused by eco-activists who found that the easiest way to get large numbers of people to certain areas, such as a forest that was being logged, was to put on a party. However, this could cause distress to animals living in the area, so a compromise solution was needed for particularly sensitive areas.”. Sounds great, but neither of these sources mentioned that Finnish science fiction film Ruusujen Aika (A Time of Roses) had silent disco boogie scene, and the film was made in 1969. Unfortunately Finnish DVD of Ruusujen Aika only has Swedish subs. Here’s some pictures and info on the film.

There is exhibition of Ed Bonja’s fantastic Elvis photographs and Finnish Elvis movie posters at Victor Barsokevitsch Photographic Centre at the moment. Confusion especially liked the movie posters. There’s something magical about old duotone movie posters. Elvis is the King!

Wagner and runner's high

Last Friday local Symphony Orchestra and Turku Philharmonic Orchestra held a joint concert at Kuopio Music Centre. First half of the concert was Wagner with magnificent interpretation by bass singer Matti Salminen. I arrived to the concert straight from eight kilometer run (+ quick shower :o) and was high on endorphin for the whole first half. And I must say Wagner and endorphin high goes nicely together.

A friend of mine has this little comic book shop called Kreegah Bundolo. In the new www-site you can find a list of Finnish comics that are in English. So if you feel adventurous or are just interested in current Finnish comics scene this is a good place to star. I can recommend books by Marko Turunen and Kaisa Leka. Especially the “I am not these feet” by Kaisa Leka is just brilliant. Anyways Paypal is ok, so you really have no excuse…

Roughly a month ago we started local manga and anime convention Nekocon with the Theme from Shaft. To my knowledge the song does not have anything to do with manga or anime, but I just love it and we thought it would be a cool way to begin. I don’t know did the kids recognise the song, but judging from the audience reaction they loved it. I have been a fan of Isaac Hayes almost 20 years now and his music and films will always be part of my life. R.I.P.

According to the only popsike listing: “The rumour is that the musicians might be Eero Koivistoinen and friends” and “It’s so rare I’ve never seen it mentioned anywhere, and I cannot find any confirmed info of the recording anywhere.”. Well, the Finnish record price guide has some info. The lineup was Edward Vesala, Nono Söderberg, Paroni Paakkunainen and Frank Robson. The record was made in 1973 and is out with two different picture covers. The red/black Joulu-Disco (Christmas Disco) is IMHO rarer, but not as good looking as the black/white one. And yes, it’s a nice funky little thing.
